Gerhard Berger can be called as one of the most experienced Formula One drivers with 210 starts comprising of 14 seasons from 1984 to 1997. He has raced for seven different teams in the span of his career which includes the likes of Ferrari, McLaren and Benetton and raced against some of the best drivers in the world such as Senna, Schumacher and Prost achieving reasonable success along the way.Born in Austria, Berger started off his career in Formula Three and after winning many races there he moved on to Formula One, with the ATS Team in 1984. In 1985, he raced with the Barclays Arrows BMW. But he finally won a race in his third season in 1986, when he drove for the Benetton team. After that he was picked up by Ferrari, for whom he raced for three seasons. In those seasons he notched up four wins and stood third in the championship in 1988, the year that Senna won his first title. In 1990, Berger moved to the Honda McLaren alongside Ayrton Senna. Despite coming into the team with great expectations, 1990 was not too good a year for Berger. He did not win a single race and finished fourth in the championship. Over the next two years he managed another three wins, but could not better his standing of 1990 season. In 1993, the Austrian moved back to Ferrari, where he managed only one win in the three seasons that he spent there with a best finish of third place in the 1994 championship. During his last two years in F1, Berger moved back to Benetton in 1996 and got his last race win in the 1997 season at Hockenheim. In 1998, he was offered a race seat at Sauber but he declined it and retired from the sport after a long, illustrious and entertaining career of 14 years.Apart from his driving skills, Berger was also known for his aggressive racing and sense of humour. Known to be a prankster, there are many anecdotes that testify his famous shenanigans on fellow racing drivers, especially Ayrton Senna. For an instance, once Berger filled Senna's bed with animals in Australia. The strength of Berger-Senna relationship was seen even after the latter’s death in 1994. Berger is now an advisor to Senna’s nephew, Brunno Senna and is helping him get into Formula One. Berger also had a 50% stake in the Scuderia Torro Rosso team which he bought in 2006 and sold back to Dietrich Mateschitz in 2008.-Rohhan A Divanji
